Quick answer: a buyer does not always need to use the toy supplier’s shipping service, and an independent freight forwarder is not automatically better. Choose the route that makes the product, packed cargo, Incoterm, customs role, freight charges, final delivery point and claim process clear before the goods leave the factory. For higher-value, repeat or multi-supplier imports, buyers usually benefit from knowing the forwarder or broker directly instead of treating shipping as an unexplained line added to the supplier invoice.
Should I let my China supplier arrange shipping or use my own freight forwarder?
Either can work. Supplier-arranged shipping can be practical for samples, small first orders or buyers who want one commercial contact. An independent forwarder can give the buyer more direct control over freight quotations, consolidation, customs coordination and shipment records. Compare the same route and named destination before deciding; do not assume supplier shipping is always overpriced or that an independent forwarder is always cheaper.
| Route | Can be useful when | Buyer should still verify |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier-arranged freight | Samples, smaller orders, simple routes, one supplier and a buyer who prefers one point of contact. | Who actually carries/forwards the cargo, Incoterm, customs role, charges included, shipment documents and final-mile route. |
| Buyer-appointed forwarder | Repeat imports, higher-value cargo, several suppliers, consolidation, established customs procedures or direct logistics control. | Legal entity, quotation basis, pickup/release process, customs/broker role, insurance, destination charges and claim route. |
What is the difference between a freight forwarder, carrier and customs broker?
A carrier physically transports cargo under its transport contract. A freight forwarder can arrange one or more transport legs, consolidation, documents and handoffs. A customs broker or customs representative handles customs procedures within the authority and market where it is permitted to act. One company may provide several of these services, but buyers should identify the actual role instead of assuming the company that sold the freight quote personally performs every step.
What should I verify before choosing a freight forwarder in China?
- Contracting entity: exact legal/company name, address, business contact and the entity that will receive payment.
- Route: origin pickup point, departure port/airport, transport mode, destination and final delivery point.
- Actual operators: whether the forwarder uses another consolidator, carrier, overseas agent or final-mile company.
- Customs role: who is exporter, declarant/broker, importer of record where applicable, and who supplies customs data.
- Quote basis: actual/chargeable weight, CBM, carton count, product/battery restrictions and rate validity.
- Included charges: pickup, origin handling, main freight, customs brokerage, duties/taxes if applicable, destination handling, storage assumptions and final mile.
- Documents: booking or shipment reference, transport document, commercial invoice/packing-list requirements and any customs/entry records the buyer is entitled or required to receive.
- Insurance: whether cargo insurance is included, optional or excluded, and what the policy actually covers.
- Claims/release: what happens if cargo is damaged, delayed, remeasured, reclassified, held by customs or needs to be transferred to another forwarder.
What should be fixed in writing before the forwarder collects my goods?
Lock the commercial assumptions before the forwarder controls the cargo. The quote should identify the stated carton quantity, dimensions, gross weight or CBM, product description, battery status where relevant, origin, destination, service level, Incoterm or handoff scope, included/excluded charges, rate-validity period and the circumstances that can legitimately trigger a revised charge.
If the goods have not been finally packed, mark carton data as estimated and agree that the freight will be reconfirmed after actual packing. A quote based on 1.0 CBM cannot fairly be treated as fixed if the finished cargo is 1.8 CBM; equally, a material price increase after pickup should have a documented basis rather than only a new number in chat.
Can a freight forwarder increase the price after collecting the cargo?
A revised charge can have a legitimate reason—for example final weight/volume differs from the information used for the quotation, the product requires a different battery or dangerous-goods route, the buyer changes the destination/service, or a documented carrier/port surcharge applies outside the quote’s validity. That does not mean every post-pickup price increase is acceptable.
Before paying a revised amount, ask for the changed input or charge in writing, the original quotation basis, current cargo location/control point, any warehouse/release fees, and the effect of rejecting the revised route. Preserve the quote, pickup/warehouse evidence and messages so a platform, contractual or commercial dispute can be tied to the same shipment.
What if the forwarder has my goods and demands an unexpected fee before release?
First establish who controls the cargo and why the fee exists. Request an itemized charge, the contractual or operational basis, warehouse/cargo location, pickup or receipt record, shipment/booking status and the written release process. Do not turn a disputed amount into an undocumented cash settlement if the cargo can instead be transferred under an agreed process. If the service was purchased through a platform, preserve the original quote/order and use the applicable dispute route within its current time limits.
Does DDP mean the freight forwarder is automatically the importer of record?
No automatic assumption should be made about the forwarder’s legal customs role. Under ICC Incoterms® 2020, DDP places the obligation to arrange and pay for import clearance, applicable import duties/taxes and delivery to the named place on the seller. The actual customs declarant, representative, importer or importer-of-record arrangement still has to comply with the destination country’s rules and the shipment structure. Ask who will make the customs entry and which entity/identifier will be used before shipment.

If I import to the EU, do I still need to think about EORI when using DDP?
Yes, because DDP does not erase EU customs law. The European Commission states that an EORI number is mandatory for customs clearance for economic operators carrying out relevant customs operations in EU customs territory. The seller/forwarder should explain the planned declarant/importer/representative structure rather than treating “DDP” as the identity of the customs party.
Can Amazon be the importer of record for inventory shipped directly from China to FBA in the U.S.?
No. Amazon states that you or an entity appointed by you must act as importer of record for inventory entering the United States; Amazon and its fulfillment centers will not act as the IOR. Amazon Global Logistics also requires customs-compliance information, including tariff classification and IOR setup, before international transportation is booked.

Can my China supplier or freight forwarder prepare Amazon FBA labels?
They can apply buyer-supplied labels and carton instructions, but the seller should generate the current shipment-plan files from Seller Central and verify the packing plan before the supplier prints/applies them. Amazon states that each FBA shipping box needs its own unique FBA box ID label, and the carrier label and FBA box ID should remain scannable on a flat carton surface. Do not keep reusing an old label template for a new shipment.

Should I use the supplier’s HS code without checking it?
No automatic rule makes a supplier-provided HS/HTS classification final. The supplier can provide the exact product description, material, function, composition and previous shipment information, but the party responsible for the customs entry should confirm the tariff classification for the destination. A classification used for one country, model or configuration should not be copied blindly to another.

What freight quote red flags deserve clarification before pickup?
- One “all-in” number with no stated weight/CBM, destination or validity.
- The provider cannot explain whether the service is courier, air, sea, rail/truck or a consolidated route.
- DDP is quoted but nobody can identify how import clearance will be arranged.
- A suspiciously low DDP quote depends on the buyer not seeing or questioning customs information.
- The provider cannot state what happens when actual cargo is heavier/larger than estimated.
- Storage, remeasurement, remote-area, customs-exam or return/release charges are completely undefined.
- The payment beneficiary changes after the quote without independent verification.
- The forwarder refuses to provide a cargo receipt, booking/shipment reference or current cargo-control information after pickup.
Jinyu’s Shipping Boundary
Jinyu Novelty can provide and coordinate supplier-side order data such as product/SKU, packed quantity, carton dimensions/weight when confirmed, commercial invoice and packing-list information, buyer-supplied warehouse/FBA labels and shipment handoff to the selected logistics route. Jinyu does not claim to be the importer of record, customs broker or freight forwarder for every project. Those roles and charges are confirmed for the exact shipment.
